For this series Ciro did a lot of research into the the seemingly innocuous task of forging nails with period correct techniques. The nail-smiths of the day were recorded to have been able to forge between 60-80 nails per hour, a rate of production that verges on being incomprehensible. Given the size of a nail, there is exceedingly little room for error, making good technique and practice vital. Ciro spent several weeks forging only nails in order to begin to learn the ways of the masters of old. In the end, the nails used in the final pieces are a blend of historical technique and Ciro’s own design, resulting in balanced and beautiful ornaments.
