The fight for freedom against despotism is as old as history itself, and in Poland it is a national tradition. Polish men and women are notorious for fighting for their own freedom at home and for the freedom of others abroad. The old common motto “In the name of God, for our freedom and yours” was finally emblazoned on the banner of the 1831 Polish “November Uprising” against the occupying Russian Empire. The uprising ultimately failed, but the Polish spirit for freedom never wavered. 

This motto has been the rallying cry for citizens and soldiers against the British Empire, the Tsarist Russian Empire, the Austrian Empire, the USSR, and Nazi Germany. 

This original banner is preserved at the Museum of the Polish Army in Warsaw.
