Definition: "A pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely. When a pendulum is displaced sideways from its resting, equilibrium position, it is subject to a restoring force due to gravity that will accelerate it back toward the equilibrium position." - Wikipedia
Time's Up
The Pendulum Clock was invented in the mid 17th century. It used a Pendulum to keep consistent time. If the pendulum wasn't moving, the clock stopped - time stopped.
17th & 18th Century pirate history/lore provide context to this design with influence from Edgar Allen Poe's "Pit and the Pendulum". If you've ever read it, the Pendulum was a symbol of impending doom. Pirate ensigns were used in the same fashion - time is running out. The goal was for the target to give up the goods without a fight. Failure to do so meant certain demise.
The design is simple, one that could be crafted onboard a ship or in a tavern or dock in some far flung part of the world using a knife, needle and some thread. The blood drops comes from our 2019 Scales of Justice ensign.
